Rest for Heroes

My time has come
This battle done
Win or lose, I shall not see

My time was rich and full of colour
A meal that filled, and spice of flavour
No pleasures more will there be for me

A soldier's life is harsh reward
To ever struggle at the sword
Lay me in the ground to know that rest for heroes

My time has come
This battle done
Win or lose, I shall not know

Addendum: 09 Sept 03
Two years have passed since The 9-11 terrorist attacks. I think about this little thing I wrote and would say that the term I used above "soldiers," would certainly apply to many on those that fell that day.

Those everyday heroes of the fire, rescue, and police departments. They did not fight terrorism, they fought to save lives from tragedy, sadly … tragedy came for them. Those civilians and military at the Pentagon, serving their country at a desk (someone has to do it). Many fell in an instant. Others battled flames and destruction … wars come in many forms.
