Why Are There Christmas Lights?

I donít get Christmas lights. I just donít understand why people need to have such garish displays. As far as I can tell Christmas lights do nothing good. They use a lot of electricity; make peopleís yards look very ugly (especially when they use figures and other things on every square inch of yard), and kill themselves because they do not know how to install them properly.

If you happen to be the unlucky person who lives next to someone who has these lights you will have to get used to the bright nights that the lights and other decorations cause. And if they happen to twinkle or rotate then the constant pulsing may cause temporary insanity. This may be of use in a court decision when you are charged with justifiable homicide.

Christmas began as a pagan holiday and then warped by Christians. Some believe that the church chose December 25 as the date for Christmas to absorb the pagan holidays that were usually held at that time. In that way they could convert the pagans to Christianity.

Christmas lights started as candles on trees, which proved to be dangerous as a fire hazard. Then the light bulb was invented and eventually electric Christmas lights replaced the tree candles. After a time the lights made it outside on the houses.

ďIt is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.Ē

I just donít understand why people go to all that trouble for a few days each year just to take it all down again after the holidays. That is if they do at all. Some keep them up all year round making them look tackier than they were during Christmas.

People make too much a deal with Christmas anyway. They spend a fortune, go into debt, and shop for presents that will be returned and never used. They rush around like crazy with undo stress just to get together with people, no matter that they are relatives, who they donít care for anyway. People they only see on the holidays or family funerals.

I just donít understand why people have to have Christmas lights and make their yards look like airport runways. I just donít get it!
