Puzzle pieces fall
upside down, messed up
onto the smooth plastic surface.
I finger each piece –
their round and square edges,
turning them over in my hand,
smoothness against roughness.
I separate them, the
straight framed edges from the
inside pieces – guts of experience

I cup the cardboard words,
scooping them inside myself
in a desperate thirsty way,
moving each piece to
resurrect a picture – life.
Word after word, image after image
cemented together in the flimsy frame.

But those pieces don’t fit
together in that neatly cut predestined way,
one after another vanishes
leaving me with secret fear –
I disappear.
