Swearing In U.S. Officials I think it’s high time we stopped making the swearing-in ceremonies a “religious” thing in a county that separates Church from State. In the past we let almost everyone use what is known as “The Holy Bible” and most recently we let one representative use a Qu’ran owned by Thomas Jefferson and kept in the Library of Congress. The document everyone should be holding and attesting to is the United States Constitution! This is the document that stands for this country, not some Bible or Qu’ran. Let “holy leaders” use those books when they become “holy leaders.” What our leaders should do is affirm on the document that our nation was founded on. The Constitution, considered by us, at least, to be the best governmental document ever written. If it is so great and wonderful and has lasted for over 200 years, then this is what are elected and appointed leaders should be using. They should not be making some pledge before some deity, but before the citizens of the United States and the document they should be pledging too, should be the one that we all live by, not one shared by only a few, even if they constitute a majority. What will an Atheist use if they get elected!? Some have indicated they want to use Darwin’s Origin of the Species. Great book to be sworn in on for elected or appointed office! What will a Communist or Socialist use!? Marx? The Communist Manifesto! Quotes of Chairman Mao! Two other good choices! If there is one thing the new Congress should tackle, it’s the swearing in ceremony and I can’t see anyone objecting to using the United States Constitution as the one, only and official document you place your hands on when taking the oath of office…
