Love Ride 18
The 18th annual Glendale Harley Davidson Love Ride benefit rolls out this year on November 11th starting off at San Fernando Road near Glendale Blvd in the early morning, with wave upon wave of motorcycle enthusiasts heading out to Lake Castaic some 50 miles inland from Los Angeles on a start-studded bike ride that benefits children.
Jay Leno, of the Tonight Show on NBC, will again be this year's Grand Marshall with Peter Fonda, Lorenzo Lamas and the X-Files Robert Patrick serving has Honorary Grand Marshalls. Celebrity alumni from past (and often returning for future year events) have included Dennis Hopper, Bruce Springsteen, Sammy Hagar, Ann-Margret, Dwight Yoakam, Nancy Sinatra, Lindsay Wagner, Robert Blake, Billy Idol, Sally Kirkland, Pamela Lee, Kirstie Alley, Crosby, Stills & Nash, ZZ Top, Jackson Browne, Willie G. Davidson, John Hurt, Robbie Kneivel, Jim Belushi, Perry King, Pat Boone, Mary Hart, Larry Hagman, Branscombe Richmond, Judd Nelson, Jan-Michael Vincent, Steve Rambo, Bruce Jenner, Chuck Woolery, U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse, syndicated morning radio personalities Mark & Brian, Malcolm Forbes, Eric Burdon, Robbie Krieger of the Doors, Dan Haggerty, Stephen "Tower" Hennenberry, Barbara Luna, Francesco Quinn, Los Lobos, Lee Rocker, Hulk Hogan and the list goes on and on...
Proceeds from this fund-raising event (there is a $50 minimum donation to participate, details and provided after the photo section) support Reading by 9, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and other public benefit organization, such as the nearby Glendale Memorial Hospital. This funding aids in the fight against cripling childhood disorder and illiteracy -- in eighteen years, the Love Ride has raised about 14 million dollars for charity!
Each year the Love Ride draws motorcyle enthusiasts to Glendale, California from around the world to participate in the event, most arriving before the event (there is a pre-event festival at Glendale Harley-Davidson as well as a special pre-event party at B.B. Scheduled entertainment includes Vanilla Fudge and Billy Ray Cyrus early in the morning at the starting point at Glendale Harley-Davidson and Kenny Wayne Sheppard at noon time out in Castaic, followed by Joe Walsh later that afternoon.

The Love Ride was founded in 1984 by Oliver Shokouh, the owner of Harley-Davidson of Glendale, to promote a positive image for motorcyclists. The ride originated with only 500 riders and raised $40,000 for MDA. Shokouh continues as the Love Ride Foundation's chairman and organizer. Willie G. Davidson is the event's Honorary Chairman.
For the sixth year in a row, Harley-Davidson of Glendale will present an official Pre-Love Ride 18 party at B.B. Kings Blues Club at Universal CityWalk. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Free preferred, secure parking for motorcycles will be available adjacent to the club. For tickets, call (818) 622-5466.
Every year, thousand of bikers show up at Harley-Davidson of Glendale to make last minute purchases, meet with friends, and go for rides. This year, Harley-Davidson of Glendale is throwing an official "day before Love Ride" party from 9am to 4pm with live entertainment, refreshments, a storewide sale, and a Love Ride poster signing with Stanley Mouse (known for most of the Greatful Dead album cover artwork). From 9am to 11am, you can register for a Poker Run hosted by Harley-Davidson of Fullerton, California Harley-Davidson In Harbor City, and Hollywood Harley-Davidson at Universal CityWalk.
The official sponsors of Love Ride 18 are the Los Angeles Times, Ford Motor Co., Tony Roma's, Adelphia Communications, Budweiser, Paul Mitchell, and the Right Stuff.
For the minimum $50 cash donation, the first 15,000 riders will receive a Love Ride 18 pin. For $65, you also receive a Love Ride 18 bandanna. If you donate $125, you receive all the above prizes plus a Love Ride 18 T-shirt. If you donate $200, you also receive an embroidered Love Ride 18 baseball cap. If you donate $600, you also receive a denim jacket beautifully embroidered with the full-color Love Ride 18 logo. If you donate $1000, you receive a special Top Gun V.I.P. pass. For $1,500, you receive a Love Ride 18 embroidered leather jacket.
For every $200 a participant donates, they receive an opportunity ticket that enters them in a drawing for a 2002 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 SuperCrew, the official truck of Harley-Davidson, and a 2002 Harley-Davidson FXST Softail. The drawings will take place on stage at Castaic Lake at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Each of the ten individuals who raise the most money for Love Ride 18 will receive a leather Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Jacket by Intersport Fashions West, an $800 Paul Mitchell VIP Hair Care package, and a Capitol Records/The Right Stuff Road Songs/Hot Rod Magazine CD package worth over $225. The top fund-raiser will receive a trip for 2 to Swiss Love Ride 10 on May 5, 2002 valued at $12,000. The trip includes roundtrip airfare, hotel, and a free motorcycle rental.
Riders can now sign-up in advance for the Love Ride at Harley-Davidson of Glendale during regular business hours through November 5th, or online at www.loveride.org through midnight, November 8. With advance sign-up, riders submit their donations and receive vouchers to receive their prizes and admission tickets from an express table in Glendale or at Castaic Lake on the day of the Love Ride. Those who sign-up in advance also receive a limited edition Love Ride 18 commemorative patch and a provision to make additional donations on the day of Love Ride to qualify for greater prizes.
You don't have to ride a motorcycle to attend the Love Ride and there is ample parking for automobiles at Castaic Lake. To avoid congestion on the highways, automobiles are encouraged to drive direct to Castaic Lake.
For the ninth year in a row, a commemorative Love Ride poster has been designed by legendary rock artist Stanley Mouse, the pioneer of the psychedelic rock concert posters of the '60s and creator of the Grateful Dead's famous skull and roses icon.
Free fund-raising packets that contain a sign-up sheet and waiver, sponsor receipts, brochures, and other information on Love Ride 18 are available at authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships and other motorcycle shops throughout the West. Over 100 shops will carry registration packets. Many of the Southern California Harley dealerships will feature Love Ride specials on parts, service, and MotorClothes during October and November, as well as group rides from each shop to Love Ride 18 sign-up in Glendale on the morning of November 11.
